5 Essential Tips When You Feel Like Giving Up: How Business Owners, Leaders and Entrepreneurs Stay in the Game (Part 1)

How Business Owners, Leaders and Entrepreneurs Stay in the Game with these 5 essential business tips

There are moments in business when quitting doesn’t sound like failure. It sounds like relief.

You wake up tired.
The revenue isn’t where you want it to be.
The strategy that looked so promising isn’t producing the results you expected.

Your clients aren’t responding.
Your team needs you.
Your family needs you.
Your inbox keeps growing.

Your health is suffering.

And somewhere between answering one more email, creating one more social media post and staring at one more disappointing number, a thought crosses your mind: “Maybe I should just quit.”

If you’ve experienced that thought, you’re not alone. I have considered this thought for more days than I can count on my leadership journey. It’s normal.

More importantly, the thought of quitting doesn’t necessarily mean you should quit. Sometimes it means you’re exhausted. Sometimes it means you’ve lost connection with your purpose. Sometimes your business model needs to be changed. Sometimes you carry too much responsibility alone and need to find an expert to help you. Sometimes you need to take a step back and prioritize your family, your health, and your faith. And sometimes the version of success you’re pursuing is no longer the version of success you actually want.

The important thing is learning how to tell the difference.
The American Psychological Association’s 2025 Work in America survey found that 54% of employed adults said job insecurity had a significant impact on their stress. The survey also connected uncertainty with emotional exhaustion and reduced motivation and energy at work.

For entrepreneurs and business owners, uncertainty can be even more personal.

Mental Health Toll: Roughly 64% of senior business leaders report facing mental health struggles like anxiety, stress, or depression, frequently caused by a lack of emotional support and formal training in managing psychological complexities.
Executive Burnout Rates: Data compiled on Executive Burnout Statistics shows that 56% of leaders face active burnout, with 73% of C-level leaders working without sufficient rest and spending up to 75% of their day trapped in meetings.

Your business may represent your income.
Your identity.
Your reputation.
Your employees’ livelihoods.
Your family’s security.
Your dreams.

So, when the business struggles, it can feel as though you are struggling. But remember, your business is something you operate. It is not who you are.

That distinction can become incredibly important during difficult seasons. Small wins matter because progress creates evidence. Your simple actions and behaviors create evidence that can rebuild confidence.

5 Essential tips:
1. REGULATE

Don’t make your biggest business decisions from your most overwhelmed state. When your nervous system is overloaded, everything can feel urgent. Create a pause.

2. REASSESS
Separate the facts from the story you’re telling yourself.

3. ReCONNECT
Your purpose doesn’t eliminate difficult seasons. But purpose can give difficulty context

4. REDUCE
Your business doesn’t necessarily need more activity. It may need more intentionality.

5. ReENGAGE
Don’t try to solve the next five years. Solve the next seven days. Choose one meaningful goal.

Bonus tip:
Ask yourself, When “I Want to Quit” Is Actually a Signal. Before making a major decision, pause and ask: What am I actually trying to escape?

“What do I need right now—not what does my business need from me?” Your answer may surprise you. And it may be the beginning of your next strategic breakthrough.
