6 Top Tips: Why Mental Health and Wellness is Vital for Leaders and Business Owners

In today’s high-pressure environment, leaders and business owners have immense challenges and pressure: long hours, constant scrutiny, and relentless decision fatigue. Here’s why prioritizing mental health isn’t just beneficial—it’s absolutely essential for effective leadership, supported by compelling data.

1. Burnout is Ubiquitous Among Leaders

  • A 2025 survey found that over 50% of CEOs experience mental exhaustion multiple times per week, and 18% face extreme stress. Further, 67% of CEOs get less than six hours of sleep nightly, severely impairing decision-making abilities. Yet only 19% seek professional support.
  • Additionally, a Deloitte study reported that a staggering 96% of CEOs experienced severe burnout in 2022, underscoring how stress is nearly universal among top executives.

2. Neglecting Leader Well-Being Wreaks Organizational Havoc

  • Stress among CEOs contributes to $14 billion annually in turnover costs for Fortune 500 companies. Companies led by stressed CEOs spend 12% less on R&D, signaling how inattention to well-being undermines long-term innovation and team success.

3. Putting Mental Health First Delivers Tangible ROI

  • Salesforce’s $6 million investment in mental health programs led to a 42% reduction in sick days, demonstrating that well-being initiatives directly reduce productivity losses.
  • The World Health Organization estimates depression, and anxiety cost the global economy $1 trillion annually in lost productivity.
  • Employees in mentally healthy environments are 12% more productive, and companies with strong mental health policies report three times higher engagement metrics.
  • From a broader perspective, employers offering strong mental health benefits are 13% more likely to report higher productivity, 17% more likely to boost employee engagement, and 10% more likely to see a clear ROI.

4. Leaders Set the Tone for Workplace Mental Culture

  • Globally, nearly 264 million people suffer from depression, and in the U.S., 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness every year.  The numbers keep increasing at a skyrocketing rate each year. Leaders and business owners need to seek resources and support to be well functioning in business and in life.
  • Yet only 50% of workers are comfortable discussing mental health at work. Mental health training for managers can reduce workplace mental illness by up to 30%.
  • Across U.S. and U.K. companies, 8 in 10 employers plan to increase or reallocate mental health spending in 2025, reinforcing that mental wellbeing is becoming a strategic priority.
  • Still, many employees face barriers: 35% feel uncertain about the effectiveness of care, and another 35% cite high cost as a deterrent to accessing mental health services.

5. Neglect Has Real, Costly Consequences

  • In the U.S., workers reporting fair or poor mental health average nearly 12 unplanned absences per year, compared to just 2.5 for others.
  • Presenteeism (working while unwell) costs U.S. employers around $150 billion annually, often exceeding the losses due to absenteeism.
  • Worldwide, untreated mental illness costs U.S. employers $47.6 billion per year, and global GDP losses due to low engagement reach $8.9 trillion.

As leaders, it’s important to feel your best through positive mental health awareness practices and keeping our body and mind healthy.

Here are 6 helpful tips that have worked for me that I trust you will find useful to incorporate into your everyday life.

1- To naturally increase your energy and stamina, prioritize regular exercise, ensure you get quality sleep, and maintain a balanced diet rich in whole foods, fiber, and protein. Easier said than done right? Consistent, committed action steps will lead to greater impact.

2- Staying consistently hydrated by drinking plenty of water is also crucial, as dehydration can lead to fatigue.

3- Additionally, managing stress through relaxation and breathing techniques and avoiding excessive caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods can significantly improve your energy levels over time. Take time to grab a few healthy snacks instead of reaching for the processed food items in the work vending machine. Healthy food is brain fuel.

4- I often take a short walk over my lunch break to get my body and mind reenergized.

5- Chair yoga is great if you have to sit for long periods at your desk for work. Research also suggests every 15-20 minutes get up to stretch.

6- Seeking a mental health coach, therapist or business consultant might be beneficial so you can find strategies and solutions that will support you and your team.
